| Violin Concerto, Op. 99; Cello Concerto, Op. 107 Oistrakh/New York Philharmonic/Mitropoulos; Rostropovich/Philadelphia Orchestra/Ormandy "David Oistrakh, to whom the work is dedicated and for whom it was written, does handsomely by it. Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic offer a splendid contribution in their well-played accompaniment. This is truly a masterful performance which has been recorded superbly." - The New Records, March, 1956
The introduction of the LP in 1948 paved the way for the recording of a much wider repertoire. Columbia Records, under Goddard Lieberson's aegis, became celebrated for recording important new scores. The two important 20th-century works presented here were first recordings that featured the artists who premiered them. Each work was recorded immediately following its American debut. Shostakovich himself was present at the recording session of the Cello Concerto. The packaging includes many session photos - many never before seen - of Shostakovich, Rostropovich and others present at the time. Booklet notes are drawn from the original LP notes. The booklet also includes rare original photos and a reproduction of the LP announcement in the July 1948 Columbia Disc Digest.
