The Philadelphia Orchestra Plays Bach
Leopold Stokowski and his successor Eugene Ormandy, two titans of twentieth-century conducting, molded the famous "Philadelphia Sound." The richness of the strings and the sonority of the winds and brass are lusciously captured in this two-disc set, which features the conductor's famous 1960s recordings of Bach transcriptions, including the "Brandenburg" Concerto No. 5; Stokowski's arrangement of Three Chorale-Preludes; and Ormandy's arrangements of Toccata, Adagio and Fugue, BWV 564; Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, BWV 582; "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" and the famous Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565. Also music of J.C. Bach, W.F. Bach and C.P.E Bach, all in gloriously remastered sound. (First compact disc release of many selections!)
